Staten Island and 9/11 Tragedy at World Trade Centre

On one side is the beautiful island of world’s most impressive city is the New York Staten Island, on the other the most horror event of the world. Tragedy that had shaken the entire world. That revealed the true colors of terrorism. Most horrified tragedy which one can never forget in his entire life. Attack at World Trade Center where security is so high that even bird cannot fly on the top of building. The place which was most secured is now lost somewhere. The famous twin tower which holds millions of people for their daily bread. Tower that was famous for its busiest site is no more.

9/11 had shattered all the dreams of many people. So, many people lost their dear and loved ones. For them their smile which they can only imagine is left for remembering. But Staten Island is the place which holds the memory of 9/11 forever. It is due to this reason debris of collapsed buildings were taken. After the initial crisis were over New York police remained engaged in recovery process. Later at request of FEMA and Staten Island Landfill debris were taken for examining the victims remain and also for criminal evidence which was later recycled. It took long time for doing all this and the city took help from other states and cities.

Debris taken to Staten Island was examined thrice for possibility of getting any criminal records. Once the large pieces of metal and rubble were removed smaller items were separated according to size and was placed on convey belts were officials inspected. Evidence and personal effects were recovered throughout the debris inspection process. Phillips and Jordan were responsible for mechanizing this debris inspection. For inspection rakes and shovels were used. Barges belonging to the New York City Department of Sanitation were used to transport World Trade Center rubble from Lower Manhattan to the Staten Island Landfill. The vehicles were examined, decontaminated, shredded, and loaded into barges for transport for recycling center in New Jersey.

The vehicles were taken from the World Trade Center site to the Staten Island Landfill for examination and processing. 5. Snug Harbor Cultural Center - Snug Harbor Cultural Centre was originally a maritime residence and hospital for retired seaman. This cultural centre is spread over an 83 acres National Historic Landmark District with old style English architecture buildings housing Snug Harbor Cultural Center and other cultural organizations. This cultural centre is now home for several museums, including an art museum, a children museum, botanical garden, and even a music hall. Snug Harbor Cultural Centre organizes several events throughout the year making it a favorite spot for arts and music lovers, kids, and tourists visiting New York City.

September 11 Memorial – September 11, 2001 is a black spot on world history, when the whole world witnessed one of the most tragic criminal attacks causing loss of thousands of lives along with huge economic loses. This memorial was dedicated to the public on September 11, 2004 as homage to all Staten Islander’s who lost their lives in attack over World Trade Centre. This memorial appears as outstretched wings of a bird or a blooming flower. There are names of all people engraved on separate granite blocks who lost their lives in the attack. The place situated at North Shore Waterfront Esplanade adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and the Richmond County Ballpark at St. George provides a calm and soothing place to remember those victims and pray for peace of their souls.

Conference House Park – A Revolutionary History

Conference House Park is very famous in History of United States. In an effort to bring the Revolutionary War to an end, Admiral Lord Richard Howe from British Government and an American delegation of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Edward Rutledge met on Sept. 11, 1776. The site for this historic, but unsuccessful, treaty attempt was the Billopp Manor House on the southern tip of Staten Island and New York State.

Today, the Conference House is managed by the Conference house Association and is both a City and National Landmark. This Billopp House is the only pre-Revolutionary manor house surviving in New York City, is surrounded by a 267-acre park. The miles of trails and a pavilion that offers waterfront views of the estuary make it one of the most romantic sports of Staten Island. Seasonal events include re-enactments, family festivals, art shows, performances and holiday events.

Fort Wadsworth – One of the Oldest Military Sites in the United States

Built along the high ground by the Verrazano Bridge is Fort Wadsworth, a formidable structure that has guarded New York City for more than 200 years. Fort Wadsworth harkens back to an era when New York harbor was protected by military bases. An enemy entering the narrows would be caught in cross fire between Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island and Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. During the war of 1812, Fort Wadsworth was crucial in protecting New York harbor from the British. During the Civil War the site was reinforced and made into the fortress that stands today. When it closed in 1994, Fort Wadsworth has been the longest active military site in the U.S. Today it is managed by the national parks Service and is open to the public as part of the Gateway National Recreational Area.

Visitors are welcome to tour Fort Wadsworth and see New York harbor from the perspective of the countless soldiers who helped to protect it. Informative tours led by Park rangers are available and the Visitor Centre features interactive exhibits and a map of the New York State harbor forts.
