Cultural Contribution of Staten Island in New York’s History

Staten Island one of the famous island of New York is famous for many things. The small island is the oasis of nature. There is natural beauty all around the island. Many creatures had made the island their home. The island reminds us for the great tragedy which the world can never forget. Apart from that at heart of island resides the small town of Richmond, which is related wit many past history and life of countryside people. The place of rustic people who loves to live together. The Staten Island is world’s greatest natural ports. Algonquin Indians of the Len ape culture inhabited the island by Giovanni ad Verrazano in 1524. During the 1600s, few settled on Staten Island but when the Dutch colonized the region, seeking wealth from its natural resources. Staten Island was named in honor of the governing body of the Netherlands, the States General, but in 1664 the British took control. Staten Island became part of the colony of New York and was designated the County of Richmond.

The island is the place of many religious activities. Slowly Richmond Town formed with Dutch, French who were craftsmen and blacksmith. Later British troops occupied and destroyed many courthouse. As Manhattan became increasingly crowded, Staten Island emerged as a popular retreat. Wealthy city residents built estates and resorts on Staten Island’s hilltops and near its shores. Many trade related to marine industries was opened like Sandy Ground, which was founded by African American oystermen. Towns along the island’s shores, like Tompkinsville and Port Richmond, become centers of commerce. Gradually the island contributed in exhibiting the culture of New York by opening many museums, which preserved the history for long. The first was Staten Island Historical Society, which preserved the evidence of past who inhabitated on this island.

Even former County Clerk’s and Surrogate’s Office was transformed into the first museum at Richmond Town. It revealed the civic pride and have many books related to history. All was donated by Staten Islanders. Later with help of New York City Island turned into village of museums, for promoting the evolution of the town. And many tourists visit the museums. The island takes one to start the journey of past with rural Staten Island of the 1820s and where Elizabeth Lake Tyson was born also the home and general store owned by Stephen D. Stephens in the 1860s and home of Hendricks Kerosene, the Dutch Voorlezer in the 1690s. Like Historic Richmond Town, only restored historic village in New York City, brings 300 years of the city’s vibrant heritage to life. It reveals the history, agriculture, commerce and maritime life on Staten Island.

Staten Island and 9/11 Tragedy at World Trade Centre

On one side is the beautiful island of world’s most impressive city is the New York Staten Island, on the other the most horror event of the world. Tragedy that had shaken the entire world. That revealed the true colors of terrorism. Most horrified tragedy which one can never forget in his entire life. Attack at World Trade Center where security is so high that even bird cannot fly on the top of building. The place which was most secured is now lost somewhere. The famous twin tower which holds millions of people for their daily bread. Tower that was famous for its busiest site is no more.

9/11 had shattered all the dreams of many people. So, many people lost their dear and loved ones. For them their smile which they can only imagine is left for remembering. But Staten Island is the place which holds the memory of 9/11 forever. It is due to this reason debris of collapsed buildings were taken. After the initial crisis were over New York police remained engaged in recovery process. Later at request of FEMA and Staten Island Landfill debris were taken for examining the victims remain and also for criminal evidence which was later recycled. It took long time for doing all this and the city took help from other states and cities.

Debris taken to Staten Island was examined thrice for possibility of getting any criminal records. Once the large pieces of metal and rubble were removed smaller items were separated according to size and was placed on convey belts were officials inspected. Evidence and personal effects were recovered throughout the debris inspection process. Phillips and Jordan were responsible for mechanizing this debris inspection. For inspection rakes and shovels were used. Barges belonging to the New York City Department of Sanitation were used to transport World Trade Center rubble from Lower Manhattan to the Staten Island Landfill. The vehicles were examined, decontaminated, shredded, and loaded into barges for transport for recycling center in New Jersey.

The vehicles were taken from the World Trade Center site to the Staten Island Landfill for examination and processing. So the beautiful island which is famous for beauty and cultural contribution of New York City helped in identifying the hideous crime. Nightlife at New York City

New York the city which never sleeps. City famous for its sky touching buildings, fast growing lifestyle and night life. One the most admirable city. Where all wants to visit once. New York City Attractions

New York one of the popular city of United States, known as “Big Apple” is one of the world’s leading commercial, financial, and cultural centers.
