Staten Island was named in honor of the governing body of the Netherlands, the States General, but in 1664 the British took control. Staten Island became part of the colony of New York and was designated the County of Richmond.

The island is the place of many religious activities. Slowly Richmond Town formed with Dutch, French who were craftsmen and blacksmith. Later British troops occupied and destroyed many courthouse. As Manhattan became increasingly crowded, Staten Island emerged as a popular retreat. Wealthy city residents built estates and resorts on Staten Island’s hilltops and near its shores. Many trade related to marine industries was opened like Sandy Ground, which was founded by African American oystermen. Towns along the island’s shores, like Tompkinsville and Port Richmond, become centers of commerce. Gradually the island contributed in exhibiting the culture of New York by opening many museums, which preserved the history for long. The first was Staten Island Historical Society, which preserved the evidence of past who inhabitated on this island.

Even former County Clerk’s and Surrogate’s Office was transformed into the first museum at Richmond Town. It revealed the civic pride and have many books related to history. All was donated by Staten Islanders. Later with help of New York City Island turned into village of museums, for promoting the evolution of the town. And many tourists visit the museums.
